Fall/Winter Art Class Schedule (2016-2017 year)

October 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th – Painting, Drawing & Monoprint w/ MYLAR with Barbara Ardan 

Material Fee: $30 / Pre-Registration Deadline: September 14th (payment due)

Class size limit: 12 participants                        Time:  Wednesdays, 10AM-12PM

Barbara is an artist/teacher known for her art work in the area. She is an adjunct professor at Hartwick Collage and is an active member of this art program along with other local art programs.

Class description:  MYLAR (frosted) is a translucent polyester “paper” suitable for acrylic paint & various drawing materials.  One side is slick & receives paint well.  The frosted side is a lovely vellum-like drawing surface.  MYLAR can also be used as a “plate” for making mono-prints.  It’s a very versatile substrate with many painting/drawing/printing options! 


November 2nd, 9th, 16th, 30th, December 7th – Clay Sculpting with Eileen Murphy

Class size limit: 10 participants              Time:  Wednesdays, 10AM-1PM   * note – these class sessions are 3 hours

Eileen returns to us by popular demand.  She is an accomplished artist in the field of clay sculpting and pottery.  She is a retired middle/high school art teacher from Cooperstown, where she also taught language art for a time.  Since her retirement she has lead several clay sculpting workshops.

Class description:  Students will learn the basics of sculpture and through direct guided experience create an animal form.  Realism is not the goal.  An animal sculpture with movement and life is!  Building for the first 3 weeks, after which there will be an estimated 2 weeks drying time before firing.  The glazing day will be determined after firing is finished.  Students should bring full body photos of animal of their choice.  This will be needed to work on the sculpture.



January 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th – Stain Painting & Sculpting Workshop with Phil Young

Phil Young is a local artist & recently retired as art professor at Hartwick College.  He leads the committee for this art program and has taught stain painting in the past.

Class description: This is a “crossover” course in acrylics.  A special additive, “Flow Release” for acrylic painting will be used.  This medium allows painting directly into various fabrics without resistance.  Drawing & other processes can be used. Once dry, the works can be soaked in a special acrylic fabric stiffener to make solid 3 dimensional forms.  A demonstration & stretching of canvases from the project will be included.  Canvas stretchers will be available for an additional cost, if desired.


February 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd – Caricature: Political & Humorous” with Gary Mayer

Gary is back by popular demand.  He is a painter / illustrator whose work in both employs exaggeration in the service of greater expression.  Exhibiting his paintings in New York & throughout the country, he has also had caricatures published in the Wall Street Journal & locally in the Watershed Post.

Class description:  Starting with pencil & moving into bolder work with ink and wire, the class will explore distortion & exaggeration in the service of humor & satire.  Discussions will highlight the history of caricature from Daumier to the present.


Updated parking information:

We are no longer permitted to park across Church St. in Smoker’s Choice/Dollar General Parking Lot nor across Chestnut St. in “First Baptist” parking lot.  Available parking will be up and down Church St., possibly HIgh St. (1st left off Church.  Other options are the parking garage and Dietz St. Parking Lots.  There is a walking path that takes you up to the library & church.  If you have materials to unload, you may use the courtyard access in front of the church on Chestnut St.  Any questions or special needs, contact the church office @ 607-432-4102.
