Rev. Marti Swords-Horrell begins her ministry at First UMC Oneonta on July 1, 2018. She grew up in United Methodist parsonages in and around New York City, graduated from Colgate, Yale Divinity School and was ordained in 1983. She has served several churches in Chicago and Maryland as well as Upper New York State. Before coming to First UMC Oneonta, she served a multicultural church in Albany and has previously served two reconcilling congregations (dedicated to inclusivity). At the Annual Conference level she serves on the Bishop's Task Force on Human Sexuality; Imagine No Racism; New York State Council of Churches and the Upper New York Annual Congerence Social Holiness Team. Besides devoting herself to ministry, Rev. Marti enjoys working out at the YMCA, swimming, biking, hiking, camping; as well as cooking and baking, especially for large crowds, and all kinds of music. She is married to Rev. Dana K. Horrell, co-editor of The Parish Paper (www.theparishpaper.come) and Executive Director of Faithful Citizen (www.faithfulcitizen.net). They have two children, Nathan, who lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Rio, and a 22-month-old daughter, June. He works for UniteHere, the hotel workers union, and Rio teaches in the Italian Department at Rutgers University. Their daughter, Madeline, teachs middle school orchestra in Houston.
